My teacher assigned a project today that involves my group and I creating a play. I chose to group up with Larry, Linda, and Sean. We decided to create a Greek play because Linda’s dad has some Greek costumes that he used for a costume party a few years ago. We thought we would have a problem with one of the costumes since it was stained, but we decided to pass it off as a blood stain. The costume is a soldier costume so blood will fit in fine with the theme of the costume and the play.
The play only needs to be five minutes long, but that is still a lot of lines to memorize. The play we are writing is going to consist of a small battle so that we can spend some of the time doing battle rather than talking, this will cut down on our lines.
Linda’s dad has given us permission to use his set of four Greek armors that consist of breast plates and Greek helmets. He has some weapons to go along with them, but will not let us use them. Linda’s dad does not think the school will let us into the building with sharp dangerous looking weapons. We will be taping old paper towel rolls together to make fake swords to spar with to get around this. We’ll paint the paper towel rolls so people will think they look like swords rather than kitchen trash. I don’t think the teacher will like it if we just jab at each other with paper towel rolls.
We’re going to make betrayal the theme of our play. The play will start with one warrior abandoning a battle and three comrades attempting to stop him. The actors will start to argue before eventually doing combat with each other. While the battle rages on the betrayer will lose his Greek helmet to a head blow.
Once the helmet falls off they will get into a dialog. They will beg him to return to the army so that they will not have to kill him. The betrayer will not do this due to his moral principles. The play will end as a tragedy because the main character will be killed by his three comrades. We all agree that a tragedy will be the best kind of play because it will add a lot of intense emotion to the story line. Linda thinks that if we practice we can get the best grade in the class.
